The Greifswald Epigraphic Research Office was created in May 2002 by the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in cooperation with the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald. Together with the epigraphic research offices of the academies in Düsseldorf, Heidelberg, Leipzig, Mainz, Munich, and Vienna, the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities supports the scholarly undertaking "German Inscriptions," which was founded in 1934. Its area of activity comprises the epigraphs created between the early middle ages and mid-seventeenth century in Germany and Austria, mostly in Latin and German. These are collected, annotated, and made accessible in scholarly editions. More than seventy volumes have been completed up to the present. With their activities, the eight research offices contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage of German-speaking areas.
